the house was quiet when I let myself in the kitchen door at one-thirty in the morning. Returning to the scene of my crime. My stomach turned over as I remembered how I’d raged at my mother earlier.

She’d left the stove-hood light on for me. It illuminated a scrawled, nearly illegible note on the counter. “P—I’m sorry. Please forgive me. We need to talk. I love you, Mom.”

Ni-i-ce, Phoebe. Making your broken-armed mom have to write. You should be the one doing the writing. And the groveling.

The talk had to wait a bit longer. I overslept the next morning and missed services at Holy Communion. By the time I got up, Mom had already left. I nearly missed the singles class at Barley Pres as well. When I finally walked in ten minutes late and tried to slip in the back, the room erupted in applause.

Oh no. Don’t tell me everybody found out about the monster mud debacle. That’s the problem with living in a small town—everybody knows everything. How embarrassing . . .

“Way to go, Phoebe!”

“Great editorial.”

“Pheebs, you rock!” Mary Jo said. “And you say you have no talent.”

What with everything else going on, I’d forgotten all about the theater editorial.

Gee. Doesn’t take much to impress small-town folks. Wonder if Mom’s read it. She didn’t say anything, but of course I wasn’t awake for her to say anything to. Besides, I’m sure there’s lots of other things she wants to say to me.

The message in class that day came from James: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.”

I slunk in my seat and tried to hide behind my NIV.
